Sharks are a diverse group of mobile predators that forage across varied spatial scales and have the potential to influence food web dynamics. The ecological consequences of recent declines in shark biomass may extend across broader geographic ranges if shark taxa display common behavioural traits. By tracking the original site of photosynthetic fixation of carbon atoms that were ultimately assimilated into muscle tissues of 5,394 sharks from 114 species, we identify globally consistent biogeographic traits in trophic interactions between sharks found in different habitats. Subcellular distribution of Ag, Cd, Co, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ph, and Zn in the digestive gland of the common cuttlefish Sepia officinalis ArchiMer

The subcellular fractionation of the digestive gland cells of the common cuttlefish Sepia officinalis was performed to investigate the distribution of metals between organelles and cytosol and the different cytosolic fractions separated by gel-filtration chromatography. Total metal concentrations vary over 3 orders of magnitude, ranging from dwt for Pb to dwt for Zn. With the exception of Cd, Co, and Cu, metals were mostly bound to the organelles. Total and organic Hg concentrations in cephalopods from the North Eastern Atlantic waters: Influence of geographical origin and feeding ecology ArchiMer

Total (T-Hg) and organic (O-Hg) mercury concentrations and tissue distribution were examined in 20 species of cephalopods (n = 278) from the north eastern Atlantic waters, i.e. from the Bay of Biscay to the Faroe Islands. Concentrations of T-Hg in whole cephalopods showed elevated variations among species, i.e. from 40 to 3560ng g(-1) dwt, but a low variability within each species (mean CV%=39%). With the exception of oceanic squids, the digestive gland globally displayed higher T-Hg concentrations than the remaining tissues. Assessment of the exposure pathway in the uptake and distribution of americium and cesium in cuttlefish (Sepia officinalis) at different stages of its life cycle ArchiMer

Laboratory radiotracer experiments were performed to study the uptake, assimilation and retention of americium (241Am) and cesium (134Cs) by the common cuttlefish Sepia officinalis. Uptake and loss kinetics of the radionuclides were measured following exposure through sediments, seawater and food at different stages of the animal's life cycle. Sediment was found to be a minor uptake pathway for both radionuclides in juveniles. Following a short seawater exposure, cuttlefish accumulated 241Am and 134Cs, but only to a limited extent (whole-body CF < 2). Contrasting bioaccumulation and transport behaviour of two artificial radionuclides (Am-241 and Cs-134) in cuttlefish eggshell ArchiMer

Radionuclide experiments were performed to study the accumulation, retention and transport of Am-241 and Cs-134 in egos of the common cuttlefish Sepia officinalis. Experiments were designed to determine the processes controlling uptake of both radionuclides following, exposure via seawater. The bioaccumulation of both radionuclides displayed saturation kinetics with steady state in uptake being reached in 10 d for Am-241 and 6 d for (CS)-C-134. Am-241 was readily taken up by the eggs which reached a concentration factor (CF) of 20 after 10 d of exposure. Lead contamination of small cetaceans in European waters - The use of stable isotopes for identifying the sources of lead exposure ArchiMer

Lead concentrations and isotopic composition have been measured in bone and teeth of small cetaceans belonging to three species (Delphinus delphis, Phocoena phocoena and Stenella coeruleoalba), to evaluate the toxicological risk and to determine sources of lead in the European waters. Lead concentrations, far lower than threshold value inducing toxic effects in human, were higher in teeth than in bones, but highly correlated between the two tissues (r = 0.92, p < 0.001). In this work, mercury (Hg), copper (Cu) and zinc (Zn) concentrations and tissue distribution are determined in seven benthic invertebrates species (the key species) from the Mid Atlantic Ridge (MAR) hydrothermal vent fields. The samples were collected from three hydrothermal vent fields - Menez Gwen, 840 m;, Lucky Strike, 1700 m and Rainbow, 2300 m - near the Azores Triple Junction. Investigating the drivers of fish assemblage trophic structure is a critical question, in order to better understand ecosystem functioning, predict the effects of perturbations and implement integrated management of exploited marine ecosystems. Variability of energy density among mesozooplankton community: new insights in functional diversity to forage fish ArchiMer

To explore some aspects of mesozooplankton functional diversity, this study quantified energy density during the springtime in the Bay of Biscay both between different species and between different size-classes. Energy densities of copepod species (Centropages typicus, Anomalocera patersoni, Calanus helgolandicus, and Labidocera wollastoni), as well as anchovy eggs (Engraulis encrasicolus) ranged from 0.5 to 6.7 kJ/g wet weight (ww). Considering size-classes, energy densities varied from 0.74 to 1.26 kJ/g ww. Mercury in seabird feathers: Insight on dietary habits and evidence for exposure levels in the western Indian Ocean ArchiMer

Breast feathers were used to estimate mercury levels in six marine birds nesting in the tropical western Indian Ocean, i.e. Sooty Tern (Sterna fuscata), Brown Noddy (Anous stolidus), Lesser Noddy (Anous tenuirostris), Audubon Shearwater (Puffinus lherminieri bailloni), Barau's Petrel (Pterodroma baraui) and the White-tailed Tropicbird (Phaethon lepturus). Seabird tissues collected between 2002 and 2004 from Barau's Petrel (Pterodroma baraui), Audubon's Shearwater (Puffinus lherminieri bailloni), and White-Tailed Trop icbird (Phaethon lepturus) colonies on Reunion Island were analyzed for metallothioneins (MTs) and trace element content. The subcellular distribution between soluble and insoluble fractions of Cd, Cu, Fe, Mn, Se, and Zn was determined in liver and kidney. In both, the soluble fraction of the cell concentrated most of the Cd and Se, whereas Fe, Mn, and Zn were preferentially accumulated in the insoluble fraction. Trace elements in three marine birds breeding on Reunion Island (Western Indian Ocean): Part 1 - Factors influencing their bioaccumulation ArchiMer

This work aimed to use seabirds as bioindicators of trace element levels in the tropical waters and food webs of the Western Indian Ocean. The accumulation patterns of selected toxic (Cd and Hg) and essential (Cu, Fe, Mn, Se, and Zn) elements were determined in liver, kidney, and pectoral muscle of 162 marine birds belonging to 3 species collected in Reunion Island between 2002 and 2004. These pelagic seabirds belong to the following species: Barau's Petrel (Pterodroma baraui), Audubon's Shearwater (Puffinus lherminieri bailloni), and White-Tailed Tropicbird (Phaethon lepturus).
